Class A Boys

100 Meter Dash
Ravenswood's Wyatt Milhoan pushed to the front in the final 40 meters to break open a close race and score the win in 11.05. That also scores him the 8th Best All-Time Class A State Meet Performance. Clay-Battelle's Zachary Hall won a close battle for 2nd in 11.20 to Wheeling Central's Braden McWreath's 11.23. Hall's Trials time of 11.11 is Tied for 10th Best All-Time Class A State Meet Performance. South Harrison Freshman Jaden Hatfield was 4th in 11.30. One of my predicted placers scratched the event.
RunWV's Current Score: 7 of 8.

200 Meter Dash
Ravenswood's Wyatt Milhoan swung into the lead shortly after coming out of the turn and powered away for the win in a very strong 22.06. That stands as the 4th Best All-Time Class A State Meet Performance. Clay-Battelle's Zachary Hall again won a very close battle for the 2nd spot in 22.46, just ahead of South Harrison's Jaden Hatfield in 22.50. Valley Wetzel's Gavin Derby was a close 4th in 22.65, and Doddridge's Sage Landis joined them under 23 seconds with a 22.96.
RunWV's Current Score: 14 of 16.

400 Meter Dash
Wheeling Central's J.J. White accelerated with about 150 meters to go, shooting into the lead just as they came out of the turn and sped away for the win in 49.06. That gives him the 5th Best All-Time Class A State Meet Performance. Ravenswood's Wyatt Milhoan closed well for 2nd in 49.95, a season best by nearly 2 seconds. Ritchie's Alex Rogerson scored 3rd in 50.40. Doddridge's Sage Landis held 4th in 50.66 after leading the first half of the race. These four were all faster than last year's winner. It was a very strong year for Class A 400. Doddridge's Jerod Trent was 5th in 51.16, and Trinity Christian's Chase Livengood grabbed 6th from the 1st heat in 51.19. Wheeling Central's Luke Minor was also under 52 seconds in 7th.
RunWV's Current Score: 22 of 24.

800 Meter Run
The field actually went out pretty passively, with the Buffalo's Nicholas Pitchford leading the field through in just over 60 seconds. Trailing close behind in 2nd was Buffalo's Jackson Mallett. Williamstown's Frank Conner was in 3rd with Buffalo's Dylan Blackshire in 4th. Ritchie's Alex Rogerson was in 5th with the Doddridge duo of Trace Berryman and Gunner Kimball in 6th and 7th, respectively. Magnolia's Landen Davis was in the 8th spot after 400 meters. With 300 meters to go, Pitchford accelerated with only Conner able to go with him. Halfway down the backstretch, Rogerson moved into 3rd. With 200 to go, it was still Pitchford in the lead with Conner right on his heels. Rogerson was in 3rd with Blackshire in 4th, Mallett in 5th, and Berryman in 6th. Kimball was in 7th and Davis remained in 8th. Coming out of the turn, there were still 13 guys in contention for a spot. Over the final 200, Pitchford pulled away for the strong win in 1:56.87, just missing out on a State Meet Record. It did score him the 3rd Best All-Time Class A State Meet Performance. Conner was 2nd across the line and would have been just under 2:00, but he was nailed for cutting in just a bit too early at the breakline. Rogers gets the 2nd spot in 2:01.19, just ahead of Mallett, who gets 3rd in 2:01.71. Kimball used a late surge over the final 100 to move from 8th into the 4th spot in 2:03.62, just squeezing in ahead of Blackshire in 5th in 2:03.81 and Davis in 6th in 2:04.03. St. Marys' Reece Westfall moved up into the 7th spot in 2:04.80 with Charleston Catholic's Mateo Lao moving into the 8th spot in 2:04.89. One of my predicted placers got hit with a DQ, but my 9th place pick wasn't the one that snared the spot.
RunWV's Current Score: 28 of 32.

1600 Meter Run
The field went out very aggressively with Buffalo's Nicholas Pitchford and Williamstown's Frank Conner leading the field out of the break. After one lap, it was Pitchford in the lead at 1:03. Conner matched that in 2nd. Williamstown's Julian Johnson was in 3rd at 1:04 with that time matched by Magnolia's Landen Davis in 4th, Tyler Consolidated's Amos Kimble in 5th, Doddridge's Carter Sias in 6th, and Cameron's Mason Scott in 7th. Buffalo's Patrick Reilly was in 8th at 1:05. The whole field was aggressive as I had the guy in last place coming through in under 1:07. Pitchford continued to lead through 2 laps, coming through in 2:10 with Conner still right on his heels. Davis had moved into 3rd at 2:11. Johnson was in 4th at 2:13. Kimble was in 5th also at 2:13. Scott was in 6th at 2:14 with Reilly matching that in 7th. Sias was in 8th at 2:15. Lap 3 saw Pitchford continue to lead and Conner continue to stick right on him as only 0.2 seconds separated the pair with both coming through at 3:16. Scott had made a big move into 3rd at 3:21 with Davis in 4th also at 3:21. Reilly had moved up to 5th at 3:23 with Kimble in 6th at 3:24. Charleston Catholic's Will Barton had climbed into 7th at 3:25 with Johnson in 8th at 3:26. Pitchford started to generate a gap with about 350 meters to go and further established that gap down the backstretch and pulled well away by the end, closing the final lap in just under 61 seconds. His final time of 4:17.20 sets a new State Meet Record and stands as the Best All-Time Class A State Meet Performance. Conner easily held onto the 2nd spot, finishing in a strong 4:22.91. That gives him the 5th Best All-Time Class A State Meet Performance. Scott crossed in 3rd in 4:27 but was disqualified for a lane violation. That gives Davis the 3rd spot in 4:28.14 Reilly took the 4th spot in 4:29.72. Kimble held the 5th spot in 4:32.91 with Barton close behind in 6th in 4:33.61. Johnson held the 7th spot in 4:37.22 just holding off the late kick of Magnolia's Shiv Patel who took the final spot in 4:37.87. One of my predicted placers got hit with a DQ, and my 9th place guy did grab a spot, so I feel like I should get partial credit for that one. Alas...
RunWV's Current Score: 34 of 40.

3200 Meter Run
Williamstown's Julian Johnson shot out of the gate and had a gap of the field at the break line. He quickly settled down and fell in with the pack. After 1 lap it was Buffalo's Patrick Reilly in the lead, just under 1:09. He was trailed very closely by Buffalo's Nicholas Pitchford, Magnolia's Landen Davis, Williamstown's Julian Johnson, Tyler Consolidated's Amos Kimble, Doddridge's Carter Sias, Buffalo's Jackson Mallett, and Charleston Catholic's Peter Basdekis in the next 7 spots, all crossing in 1:09...as did 9th and 10th. The front pack stayed bunched up in the 2nd lap with Reilly still in 1st, Pitchford in 2nd, Davis in 3rd, Johnson in 4th, Kimble in 5th, and Sias in 6th with each crossing in 2:22. Trinity Christian's Miles Steptoe was in the 7th spot at 2:23 with Mallett in 8th also at 2:23. 9th through 11th were also across in 2:23. Davis took the lead just before the 1000 meter mark, but by the end of lap 3, Reilly had regained a slight edge. The pack was still very tight with Reilly, Davis, Pitchford, Johnson, Sias, and Kimble all at 3:34. These 6 had opened a gap on the field. Mallett was back into 7th at 3:36 with Steptoe in 8th at 3:37. Reilly continued to lead through the halfway point at 4:46 with Pitchford, Johnson, and Kimble matching that time in 2nd through 4th, respectively. Sias was in 5th at 4:47 with Davis in 6th at 4:48. Steptoe was in 7th at 4:54 with Mallett matching that in 8th. Lap 5 saw the pack drop to 5 with Reilly squeezing in just under 6:00, and with Pitchford, Kimble, and Johnson each hitting 6:00 in 2nd through 4th. Davis was just off the back of the pack at 6:01. Sias had dropped back a bit and was in 6th at 6:03. Mallett had moved back into 7th at 6:15 with Steptoe in 8th also at 6:15. On lap 6, the front 3 started to break away a little with Reilly still in the lead at 7:14 with Pitchford also at 7:14. Kimble was in 3rd at 7:15, but only 0.25 separated the three. Davis had slipped past Johnson into 4th just before the line with both at 7:16. Sias was now solidly in 6th at 7:22. Mallett was in 7th at 7:33, and Magnolia's Shiv Patel had steadily moved his way up to 8th at 7:35, passing 4 guys on lap 6. On lap 7, Pitchford moved to the lead just as they turned onto the backstretch. Reilly briefly took it back in the turn, but Pitchford took it back in the homestretch and held a small edge into the final lap as both came through at 8:27. Kimble remained less than a second back at 8:28 in 3rd. Davis was now solidly in 4th at 8:30 with Johnson in control of 5th at 8:36. Sias remained 6th at 8:44. Mallett was in 7th at 8:51 with Patel now just 0.4 behind him at 8:52. Pitchford started to get away early in the final lap and sped away to win by over 4 seconds, closing in 61.6 for a final time of 9:29.04. That gives him the 5th Best All-Time Class A State Meet Performance. Reilly just held off a late kick from Kimble for 2nd with Reilly getting a 9:33.77 and Kimble at 9:34.00. That give Reilly the 8th Best All-Time Class A State Meet Performance and Kimble the 9th Best All-Time Class A State Meet Performance. Davis easily held the 4th spot in 9:41.07. Johnson held onto the 5th spot in 9:52.29. Sias held on for 6th in 9:57.14. Mallett and Patel nearly raced themselves up to Sias with Mallett getting the 7th spot in 9:59.60 and Patel 8th in 10:01.13. Last year, only one guy got under 10:00 and 10:26 placed.
RunWV's Current Score: 41 of 48.

110 Meter High Hurdles
Greenbrier West's Isaac Agee was first to the first hurdle and pulled away to win by a full second in 14.76. That is the 2nd Best All-Time Class A State Meet Performance. Trinity Christian's Simon Travis ran a clean race and hit a season best by over 0.4 seconds to take the 2nd spot in 15.76. Greenbrier West's Colton Dunbar was a close 3rd in 15.85. Buffalo's Gunner Fertig was on his way to a 2nd place finish before clubbing #8, killing momentum and dropping him to 4th in 15.90.
RunWV's Current Score: 47 of 56.

300 Meter Intermediate Hurdles
Buffalo's Cole Whittington scored a rarity with a win from Heat 1. The only other time he had ran the event this year was at the Regional. When doing my picks, I had guessed they'd scratch this and move him to a relay. Great move by Buffalo keeping him in there. This event basically sealed the win for Buffalo barring a couple catastrophies in the afternoon session. The 2nd heat saw some action as Webster's Isaac Cutlip was running in 2nd but fell over the next-to-last hurdle and fell into the path of Moorefield's Grant Sherman, who was in 4th at the time. Madonna's Jonah McKay was in the lead and tumbled over the final hurdle. Sherman dropped out of placing position and elected to re-run the event during the break, but they did it right as the break started, meaning there wasn't much rest time, and the 300's is a tough event. He ran out of gas during the re-run. As things shook out, Whttington scored the win in 41.97. Greenbrier West's Isaac Agee got the top spot in the fast heat but was 0.08 short of Whittington with a 42.05. Valley Wetzel's Sean Bates was 3rd in 42.63 with Richwood's Caleb Williams in 4th in 42.78 and Williamstown's Brogan Law also getting under 43 seconds with a 42.98 in 5th. This was a rough batch for my predictions. One was a DQ (falling into another lane), another fell, and another was interfered with on the DQ fall.
RunWV's Current Score: 52 of 64.

4x100 Meter Relay
Wheeling Central's group of J.J. White, Dominic Gianangeli, Quinton Burlenski, and Braden McWreath just held off East Hardy for the win in 43.70. That gives that group the 2nd Best All-Time Class A State Meet Performance. East Hardy's foursome of Tyler Tarallo, Brandon Jones, Mason Hamilton, and Evan Hamilton just about snagged the win from lane 8 with a 43.72. That gives them the 3rd Best All-Time Class A State Meet Performance. Buffalo snagged 3rd in 44.40 with Doddridge in 4th at 45.24, Williamstown in 5th in 45.52, and Webster scoring 6th from the 1st Heat in 45.84.
RunWV's Current Score: 59 of 72.

4x200 Meter Relay
Wheeling Central's unit of J.J. White, Quinon Burlenski, Dominic Gianangeli, and Brade McWreath buried the field by almost 1.5 seconds and tied the State Meet Record with a 1:31.64. That also gives them a tie for the 5th Best All-Time Class A State Meet Performance. East Hardy scored 2nd out of Heat 1 in 1:33.06, having gotten their baseball players that were not available for the Regional back for the State Meet (see also 4x100). Doddridge was 3rd in 1:33.75. No one else was under 1:35 and only St. Marys in 4th was able to go under 1:36 with a 1:35.65.
RunWV's Current Score: 65 of 80.

4x400 Meter Relay
Doddridge led through the 1st leg in 51.4. Wheeling Central was in 2nd. Doddridge continued to lead through 2 legs at 1:43.7. Ritchie moved into 2nd on that leg with Wheeling Central moving into 3rd. Ritchie got an exceptional leg from Alex Rogerson to move Ritchie into the lead. My camera man didn't capture the exchange, so I can't get a split on it, but it was good. Doddridge was in 2nd, and Wheeling Central was in 3rd. No one else was even close to these 3. Ritchie maintained their lead over the final lap with a sub-52 anchor leg from Garrett Copeland to take the win in 3:28.65. That gave the group of Cayden Moore, Dylan Malolepszy, Alex Rogerson, and Garrett Copeland a new State Meet Record and gives them the 4th Best All-Time Class A State Meet Performance. Doddridge also crushed the old State Meet Record in taking 2nd in 3:29.88 which gives that group of Sage Landis, Jerod Trent, Talyn Snyder, and Trace Berryman the 9th Best All-Time Class A State Meet Performance. Wheeling Central easily took the 3rd spot in 3:33.71. Everyone else was at least 6 seconds back. Buffalo closed out their great meet with a 4th place finish in 3:39.79. Williamstown moved into 5th on the final leg in 3:40.10. St. Marys was 5th in 3:40.82. Wirt scored 7th from Heat 1 in 3:44.97, just edging past Wood County Christian in the final meters. Wood County Christian got 8th in 3:45.09. Ravenswood won Heat 1 and would have gotten 7th but they got nailed for a break line violation.
RunWV's Current Score: 71 of 88.

4x800 Meter Relay
Doddridge led the field through the first leg on a 2:02.1 leg from Gunner Kimball. Buffalo was close behind in 2:03. Charleston Catholic was in 3rd at 2:04 with St. Marys in 4th at 2:05. Magnolia was in 5th at 2:08 with someone else matching that, but I can't quite tell who. I think it was Wood County Christian. I think it was Trinity Christian in 7th at 2:09 and Ritchie in 8th at 2:11. Buffalo got a 2:01 leg from Dylan Blackshire to move into the lead at 4:04. St. Marys got a matching 2:01 leg from Reece Westfall to move into 2nd at 4:06. Doddridge was in 3rd at 4:08 as these three had gapped the field. I think Charleston Catholic was in 4th and Magnolia 5th based on the way they were lined up. Ritchie was in 6th with a large gap on the rest. Buffalo continued to lead through the 3rd leg, coming through in 6:07. Doddridge got a 2:01.9 leg from Carter Sias to move back into 2nd at 6:10. St. Marys was in 3rd at 6:13. Ritchie had moved up to 4th at 6:14 on a sub-2:00 leg from Alex Rogerson with Charleston Catholic matching that in 5th. Magnolia was in the 6th spot at 6:21. Trinity Christian was in 7th, and Wood County Christian was in 8th. Buffalo closed it out with a 1:59 leg from Nicholas Pitchford. The unit of Patrick Reilly, Dylan Blackshire, Jackson Mallett, and Nicholas Pitchford set a new State Meet Record with their 8:06.80 clocking. That also stands as the Best All-Time Class A State Meet Performance. The Doddridge group of Gunner Kimball, Josh Berke, Carter Sias, and Trace Berryman easily held the 2nd spot with Berryman scoring a 2:02.1 to give them a total time of 8:12.68, which is the 6th Best All-Time Class A State Meet Performance. St. Marys held off Magnolia for the 4th spot with an 8:21.69 to Magnolia's 8:22.61. Magnolia got a 2:01.4 leg from Landen Davis to move from 6th to 4th on that final leg with the passes coming on the homestretch. Charleston Catholic was 5th in 8:23.43 with Ritchie 6th in 8:24.67. Trinity Christian held off Wood County Christian for 7th, 8:49.19 to 8:50.68. The top 6 would all have placed in the top 2 last year.
RunWV's Current Score: 79 of 96.

Shuttle Hurdle Relay
The Greenbrier West group of Randy Keener, Colton Dunbar, Benjamin McDaniel, and Isaac Agee snared the win on a blistering final leg from Agee that saw him almost fall but recover to move to the front to give Greenbier West the win in 1:01.38. Moorefield was a solid 2nd in 1:02.28. East Hardy scored 3rd in 1:04.14. No one else was under 1:05. Buffalo garnered 4th place from the 2nd Heat in 1:05.39 with Ritchie taking 5th in 1:05.45. The 3rd, 5th, and 6th place teams all got DQ'd for violations, a leg to the side of the hurdle and a pair of early exchanges. That moved Buffalo from 7th up to 4th. So, that means 3 of my predicted placers were disqualified. The teams I had 9th, 10th, and 11th did indeed take those spots. Again, I wish I could get partial credit.
RunWV's Current Score: 84 of 104.

High Jump
After almost going out at 5'10 with a pair of misses at that height, Magnolia's Dubale Greathouse went on to clear 6'2 on his 1st attempt to move into the lead and then to be the only jumper to clear 6'4 on the day to take the win. Doddridge's Jacob Dehaven also missed twice at 5'10 and again at 6'0 before clearing 6'2 on his first attempt to sneak into 2nd. Ritchie's Dylan Malolepszy and Moorefield's Addison Wilson cleared 6'2 on their 2nd attemp to tie for 3rd. Trinity Christian's Chase Livengood also cleared 6'2 on his 2nd attempt but fell to 5th on total misses. Buffalo's Gunner Fertig cleared 6'2 on his 3rd attempt to take 6th. No one else cleared 6'0.
RunWV's Current Score: 89 of 112.

Pole Vault
After missing his 1st attempt at his opening attempt at 12'0, Doddridge's Sage Landis remained in 2nd place after both he and Buffalo's Gunner Fertig cleared 13'6 on their 2nd attemp. But Landis was able to clear 14'0 on his 1st attempt while Fertig was unable to clear the mark. Landis cleared 14'6 on his 2nd attempt before raising the bar to 15'0.25 to try for a new State Meet Record. He didn't get that mark, but the 14'6 is tied for the 2nd Best All-Time Class A State Meet Performance. Fertig's 13'6 clearance ties him for the 9th Best All-Time Class A State Meet Performance. Williamstown's Louis Goodnow cleared 11'6 for 3rd, and Doddridge's Nathaniel Lloyd cleared 11'0 for 4th.
RunWV's Current Score: 96 of 120.

Long Jump
Trinity Christian's Chase Livengood held the lead heading into finals only to see Greenbrier West's Isaac Agee snag the lead on his final jump. Livengood was up to the challenge and for the 2nd straight year won the event on his final jump with a 21'10.50 leap. That gives him the 5th Best All-Time Class A State Meet Performance. All five of his legal jumps were over 21'. Agee's 21'08.25 jump got him 2nd place and the 7th Best All-Time Class A State Meet Performance. Wahama Freshman Reezin Stitt moved into 3rd on his final jump of 21-6.50 to give him the 10th Best All-Time Class A State Meet Performane. Valley Wetzel's Gavin Derby was 4th with a jump of 20'9.50. Paw Paw's Donovan Tanouye was 5th with a 20'4.50. Williamstown's Will Sites also went over 20' with a 20'0.25 leap for 6th. One of my predicted placers scratched the event.
RunWV's Current Score: 101 of 128.

Shot Put
Williamstown's Aiden Corbett sent his 3rd attempt 53'0, and no one was able to match it the rest of the way. That also gave him the 9th Best All-Time Class A State Meet Performance. Petersburg's Josh Biggs sent his final attempt 52'1.50 to solidify his 2nd place finish. These two were over 5' ahead of the rest of the field. The next 4 spots were decided by less than 10" iwth Magnolia's Hunter Goddard getting 3rd with a 46'9.50, Tyler Consolidated's Tristen Tuttle getting 4th with a 46'8.25, Magnolia's Matthew Anderson getting 5th with a 46'2.50, and Williamstown's Lynken Joy getting 6th with a 46'0.
RunWV's Current Score: 108 of 136.

Discus
Petersburg's Josh Biggs dominated the competition. He took the lead on his 1st attempt and held it throughout, and 5 of his 6 attempts were better than the 2nd place throw. He saved his best for last with a toss of 158'7 to finish off the win and score the 7th Best All-Time Class A State Meet Performance. Tyler Consolidated's Tristen Tuttle also scored his top throw on his final attempt with a 152'8 toss. Magnolia's Dubale Greathouse picked up a 3rd place finish with a 147'1. Teammate Matthew Anderson was 4th with a 141'10. Williamstown's Lynken Joy was 5th with a 138'9, and Doddridge's Braden Murphy was 6th with a 137'11. Everyone else was at least 6' back.
RunWV's Current Score: 114 of 144.

The final score of 114 of 144 means that 79.2% of the people picked to place did indeed place. That's 5 worse than last year. Congratulations to those that proved me wrong.
